About This Item

Extensive collection of 276 issues spanning 8 years of publication (out of a total of 11 years published) of the weekly Italian Fascist literary and cultural periodical, under the editorial direction of Telesio Interlandi with assistance from Luigi Chiarini, film critic and future director of the Venice Film Festival, and novelist and screenwriter Vitalino Brancati, collecting prose, poetry, news articles, and cultural reviews on various topics including architecture, film, theater, fine arts, and literature. Illustrated throughout from photographs, cartoons, and drawings. Tabloid, approx. 23 x 16 1/2 inches, folded. Original self-wrpps., housed in red cloth boards portfolios with matching slipcases. Very good condition overall, some foxing, creasing, and chipping along edges as expected. Rome, 1933-1940. Quadrivio was born out of the connection between fascism and literature promoted by Giuseppe Bottai, Minister of Corporations and National Education. The years of the journal's publication also correspond to the fascist calendar.
In 1934, Quadrivio began its anti-Semitic stance, pre-dating even the racial laws which were passed beginning in 1938. Along with "Tevere" and "La Difesa della razza", the journal under Interlandi took a harsh stance against internationalism and served as propaganda for the fascist regime. Over its 11 years of publication, contributors to Quadrivio included important Italian poets, historians, and writers such as Vincenzo Cardarelli, Corrado Govoni, Rodolfo De Mattei, Enrico Falqui, Giovanni Papini, Luigi Bartolini, Francesco Jovine, Carlo Bernari, Alberto Moravia, Antonio Piromalli, and Mino Maccari. The final issue of Quadrivio was published on July 18, 1943, a week before the fall of fascism and the arrest of Mussolini.

A collection of this scope is exceedingly scarce. As of July 2021, OCLC locates only one institutional holding in North America of any considerable size, as well as three holdings of only a few scattered issues. This collection includes the following:
