Friends Home Service Committee, London, 1968. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. cover design by John Blamires; "The development of closer ties and better understanding between Christians and Humanists is felt to be one of the urgent problems of our present society. In order to bring about such understanding both Friends and Humanists must come to comprehend their own and each other's history better than they yet do. Humanists often tend to emphasize what they disbelieve to the exclusion of any positive tenets. Above all, like the Rationalists of the XIX century, whose intellectual offspring they are, they disbelieve in the supernatural. This means that they cannot accept the validity of those personal experiences which Ouakers believe to be basic to any kind of spiritual life and awareness. No one who believes in the operation of the Holy Spirit, in divine guidance, in the validity of mystical awareness and ecstasy, in the full purposiveness of human life can genuinely be a Humanist; since the Humanist frame logically excludes them all. The attempt is made to explore and understand such differences and particularly to query the view that Humanism is the only rational position tenable in a scientific age. The book ends with an Appendix consisting of a lecture recently delivered by the author in the U.S.A. as a contribution to a scientific symposium on The Uniqueness of Man." Inscription on title page to "Percival Gardner Smith" - (the dean of Jesus College, Cambridge from 1922 to 1956) - "With best wishes from William H. Thorpe" - (also a fellow of Jesus College).
