Each volume with red morocco title label, decorated and lettered in gilt. Some rubbing and chipping to most volumes and a few hinges cracked but all still holding. Overall an attractive set of eighteenth century bindings. Previous owners bookplate on front paste downs.

"Really intense and progressive people count the calories in carrots and the vitamins in veal and advise us to live on raw cabbage.This book is not for them,but for the bad lots who openly admit that they like the pleasures of the table and who enjoy life".

A few pages with marks and spots but overall a very good copy in a fine early full leather binding, by Sotheran & Co, of full burgundy Morocco. Spine with raised bands, each ruled in gilt. The compartments fully decorated and lettered in gilt. Decorative and ruled gilt borders to the boards. Decorative gilt roll to board edges and inner dentelles. Attractive floral gold and green endpapers. All edges gilt. Blue silk page marker. Some rubbing to edges but overall a very good copy. ---- Previous owners bookplate on front pastedown endpaper - A. Miniscule rubbing is present to the extremities. Interior pages are fresh and clean. An English gift inscription dated "Christmas 1925" is written on a front free fly-leaf; the same fly-leaf contains a strip of minor rubbing/chaffing where an old Christmas card (now loosely inserted) was mounted. Anatole France (1844-1924) was a French journalist and novelist. In 1921 he won the Nobel Prize in literature. His play "La comédie de celui qui épousa une femme muette" was first published in 1908.
