About This Item
Queensland: The Government Intelligence and Tourist Bureau. Very Good. 1918. Paperback. 120 pages; Unmarked and complete in original dark green wrappers with image of a sheep in a barnyard on front wrapper. Wrappers chopped along spine and corners. Contents illustrated with many halftones; a large folding map with some closed tears repaired with archival tissue tape between pp. 96-97. Wool production takes place in Australia across all states excluding the Northern Territory. While today the state of Queensland is no longer among Australias highest wool producers, at one time, Longreach was known as the Wool Capital of the World and Centre of the Golden Fleece. Queensland, and Australia as a nation, has frequently been said to be Built on a Sheeps Back, due to the significant economic benefits brought about by our wool industry. By 1870, Australia became the worlds largest producer of wool. In 1872 wool trade between Australia and Europe was well established. By the time of 1880, Queenslands wool industry was booming and the Longreach district was building their reputation as being amongst the best wool growing districts in the colony of Queensland. .
