About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.VG+/VG.No owner inscrptn, and no price- clip to dw/dj.4-colour block (red, black, green and white) illustrated upper panel and spine/backstrip,dw/dj by Bernard Blatch; with minimal shelf-wear and negligible creasing to edges.Minisculely rubbed with minor loss to top corners and head of spine/backstrip with a tiny closed tear with no loss to front, bottom corner.Slight water-stain,internally to foot and lower rear edge of dw/dj - boards unaffected though, rear panel is lightly grubbed.Top edge slightly aged and dust-soiled.fore-edge considerably cleaner and very lightly aged and unfoxed; contents bright, tight and clean. Unblemished, plain red paper-covered boards with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and generally clean, plain white endpapers which have a small water-stain to both top spine/backstrip edges. The background to this extraordinarily talented and intelligent first novel by a young American writer is Florence under the German occupation.Isolated from their pasts, their families and their futures, and, like thousands of others, desperately short of food, the Signora and her lover,Pauli, are confronted too by a crisis in their own relationship, brought about by the differences in their temperaments, but sharply thrown into relief by the plight of their beloved city.Pauli is an exile, almost a professional exile, who sustains himself on visions of his elevated role in a finally victorious Italy. The Signora is a passionate, clever woman, whose insight and energy are confined to the present,to her relationship with Pauli, with her brother,a courageous Partisan leader, and with her small son who is suffering from malnutrition and lack of medical care. For her, Pauli's visions are unrealistic and ineffectual. And it is indeed vanity more than courage or concern which provoke Pauli into undertaking a nightmarish mission across the mountains and into the Allied lines, accompanied by Lombardi, sinister witness to those moments of Pauli's deepest humiliation and despair. The events which lead up to the liberation of Florence carry the Signora and Pauli with them, and it is only on that day of wild rejoicing that they come upon the solution to what has seemed an insoluble conflict.
