An exceptional example for it's freshness and condition and appears to be an uncommon title/book,particularly given Tilman's participation and involvement in the story/expedition. In 1977 Simon Richardson (aged 24) and Major Bill Tilman (aged 79) set off from Southampton on a voyage to Smith Island, one of the South Shetlands,in the Antarctic. The boat 'En Avant',was skippered by Simon and there were five further crew. They did not return.Simon had first met Tilman, the veteran of innumerable mountaineering and sailing expeditions and a well-known writer, four years earlier. He had crewed for the older man on his boat 'Baroque' on a long voyage to the Arctic.Tilman was famous for the spartan conditions under which he sailed, and his admiration for Simon's courage and tenacity led to friendship between the two men, despite the differences in age and experience.Simon kept a diary on board 'Baroque',which forms the central portion of this book, and gives a fascinating description of the voyage to Greenland, and a sympathetic portrait of 'Baroque's' famous skipper. The rest is contributed by Simon's mother and tells of his earlier life and of the preparation of his boat 'En Avant' for the Antarctic expedition.Bought for a song, she was completely rebuilt by Simon, working mainly alone but with very occasional help from friends,at a time when he was suffering the results of a serious leg injury. The account finishes with the tragic aftermath of the expedition. On November 1st 1977,'En Avant' sailed from Rio and was never heard of again. In the book's appendices, experts speculate on what might have happened to her and her crew. Dorothy Richardson, writing with extraordinary objectivity, gives a wonderfully balanced portrait of a remarkable young man. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
