Rayner was good at smelling trouble: he had smelt a lot of it in his time. As soon as he set eyes on the couple upstairs,he decided to steer clear of them.He was not interested int heir nightly visitors,or whether the girl who seemd half asleep was drugged or only half-witted.It meant nothing to him when the old man dropped a ping-pong ball on the stairs and nearly has a stroke because he had been seen. But even Rayner's detachment was not proof against what he found one day in his room. The troubles that he had hoped were over had begun again.
That was how the double chase started: the police on Rayner's heels and Rayner himself hunting for the girl from upstairs - on the off-chance that she might be able to prove him innocent of murder.
Stephen Coulter under the nom de guerre of James Mayo, wrote half a dozen thrillers in the sixties about one Charles Hood - a Bond wannabe/ imitation, amongst many, after Fleming's demise, but one of the better ones.Hood's cover is an art dealer with many other talents. He works for a British intelligence group known as the Circle. All the ingredients are there - manly and sophisticated hero, perverted master criminals, plenty of sex and sadism - but without Fleming's panache.
