889, 1885 - Paris - Calmann Levy, 1885 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Two leatherbound volumes with gilt titles to the spine, marble paper covered boards and marble paper pastedowns. Victorien Sardou (1831 1908) was a French dramatist. He is best remembered today for his development, along with Eugne Scribe, of the well-made play. He ridiculed the vulgar and selfish middle-class person in Nos Intimes (1861), and the revolutionary spirit and those who thrive on it in Raba gas (1872). This volume bears the bookplate of Elizabeth Sherman. She was the youngest child of Charles Taylor Sherman and Eliza Williams. She was also the neice of the American Civil War General, William Tecumseh Sherman and Senator John Sherman. Considered one of the most beautiful and intelligent women in the Washington of the late 1870s to early 1880s Elizabeth was romantically linked with the American novelist, journalist and historian Henry Adams. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm. There is some slight wear to the extremities including some rubbing to the spine bands and the edges of the boards. Internally the pages are clean although slightly agetoned as is usual with this type of paper. There are bookplates to the front pastedowns. Overall the volumes are in very good condition..
