Livorno - Vignozzi, 1825 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of comedies from the much loved 18th century Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni. Goldoni is admired for his honest portrayal of humanity, as well as his quick wit. For his subjects he often dramatised the lives of the new Italian middle classes. He was a Venetian, and was unafraid of making use of regional vernacular dialects. Perhaps even more subversive was his disinterest in religious subjects. After moving to Francefollowing a feud, he even adopted an anti-clerical tone. InFrance he found further success writing in French, andwrotea play which was produced in honour of the marriage of Louis XVI to Marie Antoinette. Collected here are some of his comedies in the Italian language. Condition: In half morocco with gilt detailing to the spines. Externally smart, with just light shelf wear. The spines have retained a nice patina. There are ink inscriptions dated 1920 to the front free endpapers of each volume. Generally clean and bright, with only very light foxing here and there. There are occasional annotations in pencil. Firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD.
