[4], viii, 308, [4]. 1 vols. 8vo. Original wrappers printed in blue and brown, advertisement on back of wwrapper Wrapper spine torn with losses, stitching loosened or separated, some offsetting from plates, light marginal discoloration, some browning and soiling of wrappers, else very good. First edition. Frontispiece portrait and 3 engravings by Massard, 4 page facsimile of a letter at back. Title printed in red and black. Pp. [4], viii, 308, [4]. 1 vols. 8vo. The Famous Tragedienne. Mademoiselle Rachel was the stage name of the noted tragic actress Elisabeth Félix. The daughter of Jewish pedlars, born in Switzerland, she and her sister began their careers with street singing where they were discovered by Ãtienne Choron, the eminent voice teacher who instructed them and gained them their admitance in the Conservatoire. Rachel's success came with her debut at the Théatre Français. Following success in France she journey to London where she was the sensation of the season. Her tour of the United States in 1855 met with small success, this attributed to the deterioration of her voice due to ill health. She died in 1858. Vicaire IV-54
