RACUNDRA'S FIRST CRUISE by ARTHUR RANSOME - 1958: MARINER'S LIBRARY #38

Between 1947 and 1968, the English publisher Rupert Hart-Davis published The Mariner's Library. The library is 47 'salt-water' books, all related to sailing, adventure and exploration. Most are true stories.

The original owner collected the set and had the dust jackets professionally wrapped/laminated.

All of the books are the same: 5" x 7 1/2". Light blue boards. Unless otherwise noted, none of them have any shelfwear or dogears, and most have the darkening of the paper that you would expect. Unless otherwise noted, all have maps and/or photos and/or drawings. Unless otherwise noted, they appear to have been read once and are in pristine condition.

This one is Number 38: RACUNDRA'S FIRST CRUISE, by the British journalist Arthur Ransome (1884-1967). It was first published in 1954.

During the First World War, Ransome had spent much of his time as a news correspondent in Russia, where he covered the revolution and its aftermath. He was living in Moscow when he approached the designer Otto Eggers in Estonia to build him a sturdy cruising boat. He planned to sail the 9 metre Racundra back to England, but delays in finishing her meant that there was only time for a proving trip in 1922 before the winter and the return to England had to be put off. The six-week trip took till nearly the end of September and much of the account was written on board. Yachting Year described it as "one of the finest of all cruising tales."

This copy is the 2nd edition, Mariner's Library first edition, printed in 1958. 157 pages.

Dust jacket is price-clipped and laminated to the cover.
