Description:
1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

Description:
New York: Marston Remedy Company, 1905. Revised Edition. 16mo (6 3/8 x 4 1/2 inches; 162 x 113 mm), 32 pages, in stapled wrappers (soft cover). Pamphlet from a company offering "medicated" suppositories and contraptions that purportedly treat men's sexual, nervous, and urinary disorders. One "treatment" involves cocoa butter. "The suppository now glides into the rectum with the most perfect ease by means of a little pressure from the finger, and, which is often important, this method of rectal treatment leaves no traces to excite the curiosity of servants or others." (page 10). While most of the "treatments" involve suppositories of one kind or another, the company also offers devices to relieve men's suffering (illustrations helpfully included). There's "Dr. Curling's Varicocele Truss," which supposedly treats pain in the scrotum. This, we're told, is preferable to surgery. "Several surgeons have been assassinated by patients whom they have thus made hoplessly (sic) impotent." (page 23). There's… Read More

New York: Gallia Laboratories, Inc., 1926. 24mo (5 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches; 138 x 107 mm), 8 pages, in stapled wrappers. Promotional pamphlet for Kola Astier, a product possessing "remarkable curative and stimulative properties quite unknown to any other preparation." According to the manufacturer, Gallia Laboratories, Kola Astier builds muscular strength, fights fatigue, relieves depression and "melancholia," stimulates the heart, and helps in combatting bronchitis, pneumonia, and "senile debility." It also acts, we're told, as a "remarkable regenerator" for "tired, overworked men and women." Where did this cure for every ailment come from? According to the company, Dr. P. Astier recognized the amazing properties of the kola nut. "Long before the white man traversed the midnight jungles and the wild plains of mysterious Africa, the natives were using the fruit of the Kola Tree to increase their physical stamina and powers of endurance. Finally, when the first white explorers forced their way into the… Read More

New York: Dr. Jeanne Walter, n.d. [ca. 1915-20]. 24mo (5 3/4 x 3 7/16 inches; 143 x 88 mm), 23, [1] pages, in printed stapled wrappers (soft cover). An early 20th-century version of fat shaming: Dr. Jeanne Walter promises to reduce your "superfluous flesh" if you buy her medicated rubber garments. "Any physician will tell you that by inducing profuse perspiration you can reduce flesh, relieve any kind of rheumatism, skin diseases and many other ailments because it stimulates circulation and eliminates waste products through the pores" (page 3). This pamphlet features a woman modeling such products as chin, bust, and abdominal reducers as well as jackets, suits, belts, and pants. All in glorious black-and-white halftone illustrations. Most products are aimed at women, although a page is devoted to a mustachioed guy wearing an abdominal belt that works by "stimulating circulation in the organs of digestion, and, by drawing out the uric acid from the system, relieving any rheumatic condition that may… Read More

Description:
1880. Copper-line engraving. 380mm by 495mm (platemark). Printed by Andrew Maverick. Title in English and French. This impression appears to be a late nineteenth century impression rather than 1808.On the night of December 31, 1775, Major General Richard Montgomery attempted to enter Quebec during a heavy blizzard, hoping that the snow would veil the sight and sound of the marching Continentals. He planned to stage a simultaneous attack on the upper and lower sections of the town but one part of the army deserted. Montgomery then decided to attack the lower part from two directions with his remaining troops, after which the two parties would join and march together through the upper town. One battalion, led by Colonel Benedict Arnold, managed to overcome the first artillery unit and move on to the designated site of rendezvous. They waited in vain for Montgomery's battalion. The general, leading about 300 New York militiamen, was ambushed by British and Canadian troops who had waited silently until… Read More

Description:
Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")
