He had previously served as the 36th Vice President of the United States from 1953 to 1961, and prior to that as a U.S. Representative and also Senator from California. As Senator he established his anti-Communist credentials by pursuing the Alger Hiss case. As the second youngest Vice President he promoted the Eisenhower agenda and verbally fenced with Russian leader, Nikita Khruschev. His legacy as President will be remembered for ending the Viet Nam War and opening the door with China. Regrettably, his actions in the Watergate break-in case led to his overt activities in obstruction of justice and a humiliating departure from politics.
