About This Item
(Pietermaritzburg: Reality, 1976). The theme of this issue is 'Soweto - And After'. 297 x 207 mm; saddle-stitched wrappers; pp. 20, wrappers included in pagination. Some foxing and browning. Good to very good condition. The journal 'Reality' had as chairman and vice-chairman of its editorial board the two leading figures in South Africa's Liberal Party, Peter Brown and Alan Paton. Other outstanding figures of the anti-apartheid struggle among the members of the editorial board included Edgar Brookes, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, and Selby Msimang. The November 1976 focuses on events connected with the Soweto Riots, now recognised as a watershed event in the history of South Africa, and commemorated annually on the 16th of June as Youth Day. 'This massive wave of unrest has all been about just one thing - apartheid. Bantu Education may have set the reaction off but what African children were saying when they started off on that first protest march, way back in June, what Coloured children were saying when they tried to stage a peaceful march through the centre of Cape Town, what Black people of all ages were saying when they stayed away from work, was, quite simply, "We've had enough!" There is a new Black spirit abroad in South Africa, as we have said before, and it is one with which White South Africans must come to terms.' .
