INSCRIBED BY Alexander Hamilton, 10th Duke of Hamilton and William Beckford's son-in-law, in the year of publication at half-title page -"To Robert Browne Esq., from the Dk. of Hamilton, June 27th, 1835". Hamilton was married to Beckford's daughter Susan. William Beckford ( 1760-1844), English author and art collector, best known for his Gothic novel "Vathek". Very Good in contemporary signed binding by Maclehose, Glasgow. Full polished calf, two black morocco labels lettered in gilt, double gilt rules to covers, marbled end papers and matching marbled edges, frontispiece portrait of the author engraved by T. A. Dean from the original picture by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Covers rubbed, two small chips to calf at head of spine, scant foxing at end papers only, two small name stamps of prior owner Charles Clarence Chapman. (1853-1944) the first mayor of Fullerton, California, who has been called "The Father of the Citrus Industry". . First Edition. Polished Calf. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Presentation Copy.
