About This Item

A Londres: Fenchurch-Street. Very Good-. 1785. First Edition. Full Leather. xii, 334, (2) ads pages; Imprime par Galabin et Baker, Ingram-Court, Fenchurch-Street, aux depens de l'auteur ; et se vend chez J. Boosey, King-Street, dans Cheapside. Contemporary sheepskin, flat spine "paneled" by plain horizontal rows of gilt dots. Extremities rubbed through, joints cracked, upper board held by cords, top corner of front board chipped, other corners leather rubbed through. There is an early ink inscription in a childish hand: "Sir Thomas, Esquire / French Book 1788" and stamps of kingly image on front endpapers; likely owner's surname "May" on ffep torn - missing about half; rear free endpaper lacking. Leather cracked lengthwise at spine. Text block clean, with a few toning spots. Despite the wear and minor depredations of nearly 240 years, this copy has survived intact and in fairly good order. Most educational books are worn to bits, and other examples of this rare first edition may have passed out of existence under the generations of young "readers." Although a frontispiece appears in later editions, none is mentioned in extant copies of this first edition, and collation provides no evidence for one. The last leaf contains advertisements for two other books by Wanostrocht - A Practical Grammar for the french Language and A Classical Vocabularly French and English. A decent copy of the very scarce first edition of this work designed for the instruction of the French language to English-speakers. OCLC 1062276103 Only a single location noted - The British Library. Not located in the ESTC, LoC, AAS, etc. The list of subscribers accounts for 387 copies, including three individuals named Bathurst, Miss Dealtry - Ladies Boarding School (6 copies), Mr. Vernon (12 copies), etc. Of Flemish origin, the Wanostrocht family come to England in the 1770s, when Nicolas Wanostrocht (1745-1812) was appointed tutor to the children of Henry Bathurst, second Earl Bathurst, at Cirencester Park. By 1795 he was financially able to found a school known as the Alfred House Academy in Camberwell, a location, according to the prospectus, 'very convenient on account of the coaches going to and from London every hour'. The school itself was ahead of its time in encouraging the teaching of French rather than the classics and in its civilized approach to both discipline and leisure. [Note: Wanostrocht's nephew Vincent and Vincent's son Nicholas followed him in heading the school. Nicholas was a very accomplished cricket player known as "Nicholas Felix" - a name he assumed to cloak his sporting activities from the eyes of his students' parents.] The author of our book, Nicolas Wanostrocht, wrote a number of textbooks on French language, grammar, and syntax, mostly for the use of children and youth. With his wife, Sarah (d. 1820), he compiled 'Le Livre des Enfans.' This compilation of historical and moral tales was designed to inspire a juvenile readership both to virtuous behaviour and an appreciation of the French language. PUBLISHER: John Boosey (c. 1736-1820) was a bookseller in 18th century London. His family, which is of Franco-Flemish origin, came over from the Continent and settled in Essex in the early part of the fifteenth century. The firm of Boosey & Co. was founded by John Boosey, probably in the late 1760s, and comprised a bookshop, specialising in foreign language titles, and a lending library. As were other members of the Sandemanian Church, John Boosey's family remained involved in the bookselling and publishing trade for several generations. Notably, the "Great Circulating Library" mentioned by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in his reminiscences about his youth at Christ's Hospital has been identified as John Boosey's Circulating Library. In a notebook entry for March 1832, Coleridge recalls that he "read thro’ the whole Catalogue, folios and all - whether I understood them or did not understand them - running all risks, in skulking out, to get the two Volumes which I was entitled to have daily - Conceive what I must have been at 14." The title on offer here is listed in J. Boosey's "A New Catalogue of the Circulating Library at No. 39, King Street, Cheapside: Containing Upwards of Fifteen Thousand Volumes English, French, Italian, &c." issued January 1787 on Page (29) of The Appendix as entry "8760" at a price of 3s 6d (though this ad refers most probably to the second edition, published in 1786). John Boosey's circulating library was significantly involved in lending (and selling) musical scores and related books. This business eventually became the leading music publisher Boosey & Hawkes after a merger with Hawkes & Son in 1930. .
