"Philadelphie" [i.e. Paris]: chez Philarèthe, rue de l'Equerre, à l'Aplomb. Very Good. 1787. Softcover. 128; 149; 142 pages; Three volumes, in original blue paper wrappers, stiffened with printer's waste (from an eighteenth century French law book). Uncut edges, all three half titles present. Generally an excellent set, and a rare survival in fragile contemporary wrappers. (Minor spotting to a a couple of preliminary leaves, rubbing to the old paper slips with manuscript titles in ink on the spines). A complete set of this significant French Masonic title. According Ligou (Dictionary of Freemasonry, PUF), the first edition appeared in 1781 in 4 volumes. There were editions following in 1783, 5, 6 & 1787; all these have the main title divided (like ours) into two volumes, and sometimes accompanied by 'La Vraie maçonnerie ...' (as ours is). The 1781 first edition is quite rare. Our 1787 set is unusual in its state of preservation uncut in eighteenth century blue paper wrappers. It is an "ordinary" set, without the rare engraved folding plates present in only a few copies. Ours does have a folding typographic table. The "Philadelphie" imprint is fictitious -- almost certainly this was printed and sold in Paris. In fact, at least two of our volumes are likely counterfeit editions -- (with printer's fleurons on the title pages not as described by Fesch, and lacking a hyphen in the final word of the imprint: "A Philadelphie, chez Philarèthe, rue de l'Equerre, à l'Aplomb" -- (rather than "A-plomb" -- as found in the third volume of our set). Also, the first volume of our set has a peculiar printing mistake in the title page, with a backward-facing letter "E" substituted for the "R" in "Maçonnerie." [Ours exactly matches the copy digitized by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, which also appears to be bound in old wrappers -- with the exception that our copy, unlike the Munich copy, retains its original half title page). The main title's reference to "Maçonnerie Adonhiramite" concerns Adoniram, the son of Abda -- who was the tax collector In the united Kingdom of Israel for over forty years. In addition to those duties, Adoniram was in charge of conscripted timber cutters during the building of King Solomon's temple. [see I Kings 5:13,14]. A central allegory of Masonic ritual concentrates on the building of the Temple of Solomon. An uncommon set, in its original binding. .
