About This Item

London: Ward Lock, 1932. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. The DETECTION CLUB COPY. Publisher's variant orange cloth (noted in Cooper & Pike as being identical to the more commonly-seen green or greenish-brown boarded copies) with titles to spine and front board in black lettering. The book is in VG (or better condition) with bright and clean boards with slightly soft spine tips. With the Detection Club bookplate to the front pastedown as this book had been donated by H C Bailey to the Detection Club where he was one of the 28 or so Founding Members. [The Club acquired members bit by bit in its first two years of existence from 1930. Formal rules and constitution were adopted in 1932 and it makes sense to describe the 28 members at that point as Founder Members even if they werent around right at the start. H C Bailey was one of them. He attended the Detection Club dinners although may not have played a very active part as he was quite a retiring individual]. In the RARE D/W priced 7/6 net to the spine (as called for) with the castle looming in the background and the Luel Cup prominent in the foreground. The D/W is a VG example with just a hint of soiling to the panels, splitting along front spine edge, a small chip to the top left hand corner of the spine (not affecting any lettering) and wear to the extremities. A very good copy. First edition, first printing. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone title. This copy with great provenance, having been gifted from the author to the private library of "The Detection Club", whose members included Dorothy L. Sayers, Agatha Christie, and many others. A scarce title in D/W. Photographs/scans available upon request
