New Haven: William W. Morse, 1802. 1802 edition. Pages good, securely bound in very worn cover (likely the original), binding tender but intact. Moderate foxing throughout text, with occasional light spotting, otherwise clean and unmarked - no writing or other markings. There are a few short closed tears and overall margins are narrow - in a few instances (~20 leaves) type on outside or bottom margins has been knocked into - trimmed off - most times not affecting readability. Book was bound in paper-covered wooden boards with a calf leather spine. The paper has worn entirely off the rear board and off the bottom quarter of the front board. The endpapers are starting to separate from the boards. The plain brown leather spine, unlettered, is intact though worn and cracked. Binding intact though covers are fragile, all pages secured. Overall condition is Fair+. Includes Williams' Dedication to Governor John Dudley; a Sermon preached by Williams upon his return; an Appendix by Stephen Williams of Springfield (including names of the persons taken captive at Deerfield, Feb. 29, 1703-04); and an Appendix by Rev. John Taylor detailing events (mischief done) between the time of Williams' death and the end of the French & Indian war; and a Conclusion by Rev. Mr. Prince of Boston. Reverend Williams records the terror and trauma of the February 1704 raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts (in which a servant and 2 of his children were murdered), the long march through the snow and ice (his wife, weak from a recent childbirth, was killed early in the trek), and his years of captivity in Canada. 3-1/2 x 5-7/8"; 188 pages (including title page and 3-page Dedication). First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair/No Jacket. 16mo.
