About This Item

Paris: Chez Denully, 1742. Later Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo. [5], ii-xxiv, [1], 2-315, [7] pp. Full contemporary maroon morocco, spine in six compartments lettered in gilt. All edges gilt, the edges of the board's interiors show lovely gilt gauffering. Beautiful later eighteenth century marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated by an engraved portrait frontispiece of Marcus Aurelius, with the engraver's name gently rubbed away. Engraved title page printed in red and black, a few engraved head and tailpieces. Translated into French by Monsieur and Madame Dacier (husband and wife classicists Andre and Anne Dacier), and with a preface by them. The Dacier translation was first published in Paris 1691. Moss, 61; Honderich OCP, 66; OCD, 220-221. The Meditations was most likely a kind of personal journal kept by Marcus Aurelius (originally written in Greek) recording his thoughts and reflections upon life, virtuous conduct, and the nature of the universe. The work is generally thought to be from his later years. Lost until the fourth century, it is now considered one of the last great works of Stoic philosophy from antiquity. A Very Good antiquarian volume with the crown of the spine restored (the restoration was likely done within 100 years of this volume's publication), a few contemporary owner's annotations, minor spotting to the leaves, not affecting the text.
