About This Item

New York, NY Penguin Books, 1986. Paperback First Edition Thus, later printing [1986]. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only minor indications of use: there is a crease near the upper rear corner; the pages have tanned a bit due to aging; the former owner's name at the top of the front endpaper. The binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 463pp. This book was first published in the Pelican History of the Church Series in 1964 and has gone through many printings, with minor revisions along the way. This is the First Edition Thus, later printing [1986]. Trade Paperback. This is a classic in its field and well worth reading. The Penguin History of the Church is an excellent series, even if dated. One would need to read more recent historians such as Diarmaid MacCulloch, Carter Lindberg and Christopher Haigh to get an up to date picture but then it would never do to overlook the classics. Chadwick has great literary style. Consider his description of the survival of some kind of tolerance even in the era of religious wars - "charity, whipped and bleeding, limped up the ladder into the ark." (p.374). He knows the period well, and is the master of the well chosen anecdote to illustrate his historical analysis. It is a joy to read a master in his field.

Synopsis

Owen Chadwick stands out as the trustsed authority on Reformation history. Not only is his scholorly knowledge outlined with enough precision to impress any aspiring historian, but Chadwick also manages to convey the facts with a level of underlying passion.
