With 6 engraved folding maps (one map with tears without loss), but actually 7 maps because two maps are joined together. Contemporary full calf, spines with five raised bands, richly decorated in compartments, slightly rubbed, head of spine (volume one) chipped. First French edition translated from the German.Important and famous travel accounts by two members of an embassy sent out by Duke Frederick III of Schleswig-Holstein in 1633-39, the first German trading mission to Persia. Adam Oelschläger (Olearius), renowned mathematician and orientalist gives a comprehensive account of Russia and Persia. In 1638 Mandelso travelled further east into India and in 1639 he sailed for England calling at Ceylon and Madagascar. His account contains descriptions of Madagascar, Ceylon, India, East Indies, Japan and China. Mandelslo's account is published posthumously by Olearius. The maps are: La Livonie ou Liflande; Moscovie; Le Cours de La Riviere de Wolga & Mariis Caspii ostium ad Wolgam (pasted together); Mare Caspium siue Hyracanum Persis Kulsum; Maris Caspii alluens Hyrcaniam siue Kilan; and Les Indes Orientales. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 44 engraved maps, plans and views (31 folding), 19 in-text engraved illustrations. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, red and green morocco lettering pieces in the second and third, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges.
