S.l.: s.n., 1867. Fine. 1 handwritten document (36 x 22 cm.) consisting of 4 pages in a beige wrapper, folded. Joseph S. Patterson of Pottsville, Pa., trustee of Eliza Peale; Charles Peale and Edward B. Peale, executors of the will of Eliza Peal, deceased; and Edward B. Peale and his wife, Louisa Peale, for $1 to each of them by the Schuylkill Navigation Co. release the Schuylkill Navigation Co. from all compensation for damages by injuries done by the company by the raising of dams or other alteration of their works to the tract of 125 acres in N. Manheim Township (known as the Peale Farm), which was conveyed to Joseph S. Patterson by George Patterson. Signed March 4, 1867, and recorded on March 8, 1867, by Martin Scheafer, recorder of Schuylkill County, with the embossed county seal. The Schuylkill Navigation Co. was chartered in 1815 in Pennsylvania; the system of canals that it built eventually included 120 locks and the first canal tunnel. To fund the work, it sold shares to private subscribers. Competition from railroads resulted in the lease of the canals to the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad in 1870. Although the commercial use of the canals decreased, the final cargo was not transported until 1931. This release would have been one of the last transactions of the company made to maintain the canal system it had developed. In Fine Condition: clean and intact.
