First edition, first printing, with title page dated 1843 in Roman numerals. Publisher's brown-cloth binding decoratively blind-stamped on both covers with gilt lettering on the spine. Gilt-covered top edge. Text framed in a decorative double-ruled box on each page. xx + 224 pages. Approx. 9" x 6" x 3/4". Illustrated with b/w engravings of paintings including frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare. In VERY GOOD condition. Top third of the spine cloth appears to have been torn and inexpertly glued back down, wear to the spine ends and corners, wear and dulling to the gilt lettering and light staining on the front board. Otherwise clean, tight and square with strong, secure joints and hinges. Text pages are all in excellent condition with no foxing, staining or significant flaws, but the front endpapers and engraved plates show large moisture stains and browning to the edges. No previous owner's signature or bookplate..
