Autobiography of the man who led the Arctic expedition of 1881 to 1884, known as the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition (officially the International Polar Expedition). Inscription at front end paper to "Jack Blackman", whose great uncle, Arctic explorer I. I. Hayes, is mentioned in the book. The author was an explorer and US Army career officer.
