"Together with his later experiences in official and business capacities and a brief description of the resources beauties and advantages of the New Northwest , the several Indian wars anecdotes etc." pages are brown and somewhat brittle with first dozen or so pages having bottom corner chipped off. title page is loose but partially holding. This copy has been rebound in red cloth with gold lettering on spine; 5 3/4 x 8 " .

Battle Creek, MI: Review and Herald, 1888. Third edition. 8vo. xxv, 508 pp. Illustrated, plates, portrait frontispiece. Inscribed by the author on a front endpaper in 1889, using both his given name and his Indian name "Timus." A native of Ohio, Hunter emigrated to California, near Yreka, in 1852; among other exploits, he relates stories of three Indian wars, the Rogue River Wars of 1853 and 1855-56, the Nez Perce War of 1877, and the Bannack Indian War of 1878. Howes H-811. Graff 2018. Cowan (II), p. 298. Rocq 15863. Smith 4820. Phillips, p. 190 ("appendix added" to this edition). Still a good solid copy with a nice inscription by the author. Original gilt-stamped illustrated red cloth (rubbed, a little discolored along the top edges of the boards, spine faded, spine ends a little frayed), floral endpapers.(1326).

San Francisco: H.S. Crocker and Company, 1887., 1887. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Maroon decorated cloth, decorated endpapers, xxv [1], 454 pp., frontis. [portrait], dedication, introduction, preface, illustrated. Six Guns 1081 says "Rare." "Contains some information on vigilantes and road agents." The author tells of his many experiences, mostly in the Pacific Northwest. Mining life in Shasta City district is vividly portrayed, and the arrival of the first white woman in camp is described in minute detail. A tale of the Rogue River Indian War of 1853 is recounted in some vivid detail, as well as encounters with grizzly bears, his time as sheriff of Pacific county, being nursed back to health by a Mormon family, heading to Kootenia in British Columbia when gold was struck there and the enforcement of the rigid mining laws on British territory are described, and much more. Near fine, tight copy. Housed in a folding slipcase with gilt-stamped leather label on spine.
