Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War. 36th Congress, 2nd Session, House of Representatives, Ex. Doc. Washington, D.C., George W. Bowman, Printer, 1861. Prepared shortly before the American Civil War, Delafield details military observations about Russia, Turkey, Austria and France during the Crimean War, from small arms to artillery, gun ships, fortresses, cavalry, hospitals, transport (from guns to wounded soldiers), and maps.
Black hc with blind-stamped U.S.A. seal and design on both covers, heavy 4to (29 cm), color illustrated half title, xxiv with index, 278 pp (illustrated), plates 1-41 mostly fold-out maps with some engravings, followed by plate 2, plates with figures 26-38, 38a-d and (b. c.), 50, 50a-e, 54a-b, 55a, 57a-b, 58-62a, 63-64, 78-79, and 82-83, (some color lithographs). Previous owner inscription dated September 12, 1864, to Joseph H. Guthrie, Esqr.
Fair (interior good): Spine missing and masking tape "repair" around edges, front matter and plates 38 and 41 light bug damage to edges, corners creased, light foxing/smudging, a few pages and figures 50a-b dampstained, closed tears on maps, no internal markings.
