The first folding map has two (approx. 2") closed edge tears. The third map has a small linen patch lower outside edge and light edge wear on the outer fold. Large 8vo, pp. 363, [3]; 10 lithograph plates (all but 1 tinted), plus 4 large folding maps (all bound in upside down); original diaper-patterned green cloth, gilt lettering on spine quite faded, else a very good copy. Ex-Northern Pacific Railway Co. with 2 small rubberstamps on the flyleaf and a small accession label at the lower corner of the upper cover, but no other markings. Laid in is an 1880 G.P.O.-published bifolium headed "Northern Pacific Railroad" being the printed text of a letter from Mullan to Senator L. F. Grover, "relative to shipment of cattle from Oregon or Washington Territory." See Howes M-884 showing this to be another issue of the Senate Exec. Doc. 43. Wagner-Camp 393.

[4], [1]-363, [1, blank], [1, errata], [5, blank] pp. With ten tinted plates and four folding maps. Bound by the US Government Bindery in green textured cloth. Boards ruled in blind. Spine lettered in gilt and blind. A bit of browning and offsetting throughout. A few small dampstains to fore-edge and to the creases of the first and second map. A tiny hole in the cloth of the back outer hinge. Three previous owner's small bookplates on front pastedown. Overall a very good copy. "[John Mullan was an] army explorer, road builder, and lawyer... he volunteered for assignment to the northern railway survey headed by Governor Isaac I. Stevens of Washington Territory. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering."
