In addition to the usual concerns of the U.D.C. (funding for monuments, care of veterans, publication of the "Confederate Veteran," etc.), this report discusses the organization's efforts to aid U.S. servicemen during World War I, including the endowment of hospital beds in France. Charleston native, Mary Barnett Poppenheim (1866-1936), was president of the U.D.C. from 1917 to 1919. She and her sister, Louisa, "helped bring the burgeoning women’s club movement to Charleston, as founding members and officers of the Century Club, the Civic Club, the Intercollegiate Club, and the Charleston City Federation of Clubs . . . Mary focused on the U.D.C. She was president of the South Carolina division and then president-general of the national organization . . . Mary was most interested in preserving history and was one of the editors of the first two volumes of 'South Carolina Women in the Confederacy,' a collection of personal reminiscences published by the state U.D.C. in 1903 and 1907. She also led South Carolina’s fund-raising efforts for a U.D.C. monument at Shiloh.
