Trier, Germany: Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Trier, 2006. Soft cover. New/No Jacket. The first volume in the new series entitled LAPASEC (Landau Paris Studies on the Eighteenth Century), this collection contains essays on representation and performance, two key terms in the critical debates centering on the age of Enlightenment. The contributions are by established and younger scholars from North America, Europe, and Australia. Providing both an international and interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of specialist approaches in such fields as art history, literary criticism, history, philosophy, drama and musicology, LAPASEC puts the focus on aesthetics and ideologies rather than topical subjects. The volumes are based on international conferences alternating between Paris and Landau and organized by Frédéric Ogée and Peter Wagner. The essays in the present volume were selected as the best contributions to the Landau symposia in 2003 and 2005. Volume 2 will present papers from the meetings in Paris on ruins (2004) and the sketch (2006). Peter Wagner is Professor of English and American Literature and Chair of the English Department at the Landau Campus of the Universität Koblenz-Landau. In eighteenth-century studies, he has published on William Hogarth, Jonathan Swift, and erotica of the Enlightenment as well as on image-text relations. He is also the editor of Cleland's Fanny Hill and Smollett's Launcelot Greaves in the Penguin English Classics series. Frédéric Ogée is Professor of English Literature at the University of Paris 7 - Denis Diderot. He has published on English and French eighteenth-century literature, art, and landscape gardening and edited two collections of essays on William Hogarth: The Dumb Show: Image and Society in the Works of W. Hogarth (1997) and William Hogarth: Representing Nature's Machines (2001), with David Bindman and Peter Wagner, and another collection entitled 'Better in France?' The Circulation of Ideas Across the Channel in the Eighteenth Century (2005).
