About This Item
4 page handwritten record of the election held on February 6, 1837. Lists all the candidates, the results of the election (including how many votes each candidate received). John York, Indian fighter and soldier was elected Sheriff. Benjamin Thomas was elected President of the Board of Managers. The result were sent to the Honorable Thomas Barnet of San Felipe who had just been appointed Chief Justice of Austin County by Sam Houston on December 20, 1836. The town had previously been burned by its residents as they fled before the Mexicans could occupy it. Here it was already being rebuilt and attempting to reestablish itself with noteworthy citizens. On November 18, 1837 the Republic of Texas made the newly rebuilt town the county seat of the newly established Austin County. All three of those men are listed in the Handbook of Texas. The list of 25 names shows the electors. The document was recorded by W.P. Hill, the secretary and then sent to Thomas Barnet. In remarkably nice condition persevered in mylar.
