Very good/Near fine. 404 pages. 24mo, 11 x 5 cm, [*1-*24,A1-Z24,Aa1-Cc8], first published posthumously in 1583. A trusted Protestant counsellor of Elizabeth I, he and John Cheke were the great classical scholars of the time in England. This, his best known work went through numerous printings, and is in the Elzevir series, "Petites Republiques." WILLEMS 337. Engraved title depicting allegorical figures and the bust of one of the English Kings. Very firm copy, moderate soiling to covers, modest age-toning, some text underlining in an early hand confined to leaves at center of text.
