About This Item

Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1934 First edition, first issue with "First edition June 1, 1934" on copyright page. Pp. xvi, [2], 314. Frontispiece plus 25 photographic plates (not included in the pagination), 6 maps; extensive notes, bibliography and index. Publisher's brown cloth, gilt-lettered spine. A very fine (as new) copy with the very elusive dust jacket and the plain glassine inner jacket. Excessively scarce as a first issue, most especially in this condition and with the two dust jackets. A very early and very scholarly University of Oklahoma title. The author was considered by many to be Oklahoma's greatest historian. This was the author's second book, but her first full historical work on Native Americans. Here, her PhD. dissertation is considered a pioneering effort in Native American history, "seeing events from inside the tribe, rather than from a purely Anglo-American perspective." The Choctaws, one of the proudest of the Five Civilized Tribes maintained their autonomous government and distinctive institutions after being forced from their ancestral homes and through subsequent efforts from the Civil War to the close of the century. Considered to be the first comprehensive treatment of Choctaw history after the Civil War..
