Burlington, Iowa: Burlington Publ Co, 1877. First Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good. 328pp; frontispiece and 10 plates of illustrations by R.W. Wallis. Bound in decorative brown cloth, stamped in gilt and black yellow endpapers. 7.5" x 4.75" Author's first book. [Blanck, BAL 1954: Blanck's state A, with a decoration below the author's name on the spine. Wright, American Fiction III, 790.] Laid in is a signed, handwritten letter from Burdette at Bakersfield, California, to a Bryn Mawr woman, dated March 19, 1896. In part: "...It is a far cry from Bryn Mawr to Bakersfield and now you understand why you have waited so long....As March is not usually a month of roses in Philadelphia, I take the liberty of sending you a native of this land of sunshine and flowers....Sincerely yours, Robert J. Burdette."
