About This Item

Rising '44: The Battle For Warsaw, Davies, Norman. Published by Macmillan, London, 2003. 752 Pages with 16 pages of b/w photographs. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. Black boards, gilt spine titles; black endpapers. Volume is in pristine, unread condition; dust jacket is not clipped and is protected in mylar. Norman Davies is recognised as the Leading British authority on the history of Poland. About 200 pages are devoted to the Warsaw Uprising itself which resulted in 200,000 dead and complete destruction of the city. The remainder of the book provides a general overview of the two centuries of Polish history prior to WWII and into the origins of the Cold War. The narrative devoted to the Uprising is supplemented by personal statements and recollections of those who witnessed or participated in the described events. In a chapter titled "Interim Report" at the end of the book, Davies concludes that the "tragedy of the Warsaw Rising resulted from a systemic breakdown of the Grand Alliance."

Synopsis

One of the most dramatic and shameful episodes in World War II was the doomed Warsaw uprising of 1944—an uprising that failed because the Allies betrayed it. Now that story comes to its full terrible life in this gripping account by the bestselling historian Norman Davies. In August 1944, encouraged by the advance of the Red Army, the Polish Resistance poured forty thousand fighters into the streets of Warsaw to reclaim the city from the hated Germans. But Stalin condemned the uprising as a criminal venture. For sixty-three days the Wehrmacht methodically set about crushing the rebellion and destroying the city. Following the battle’s desperate progress through the cellars and sewers of Warsaw, Rising ’44 retrieves its subject from the shadows of history, revealing its pivotal importance to the outcome of World War II and the Cold War that followed.
