London, England: Ward, Lock & Co, n.d., circa 1920. First Edition. Original Wraps. Very Good -. Octavo, 8 1/2" tall, 125 pages, colored wraps. A very good minus original soft cover edition, cover illustration bright but spine chipped at top and bottom edges with 3" tear running up front hinge, otherwise moderate shelf wear, interior text paper yellowed but sound and clean otherwise. Bertram Mitford was a contemporary of H. Rider Haggard, and served and wrote about South Africa, the British Empire, and the native tribes with some period sympathy. The cover is early Twentieth Century style with a doe-eyed young woman and a spear carrying Zulu warrior behind her.

Includes illustrated plates by Stanley L Wood. Pages are rather marked with pronounced tanning and foxing, plus thumbing. Hinges are extremely cracked with exposed netting. Occasional gutter cracking. Faint creases to some pages. Boards have heavy edge wear, with intense bumping and fraying to corners, a bit bowed; spine ends are very crushed and frayed. Joints worn too with splits. Scratched, rubbed and marked overall. A few liquid droplet marks. Spine is noticeably sunned. Book has a heavy forward lean. Gilt is bright.
