Longman Rees Brown Green & Longman; J McCormick, 1837. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: J M W Turner. 2 separately bound volumes in matching bindings with rubbed half-leather and marbled boards with dual text in French and in English and plates from drawings by J M W Turner. One volume,Turner's Rivers of France - The Loire, was published by J McCormick, is undated but two of the plates are dated 1835, the spine had gilt lettering and decoration, the external hinges are well-rubbed, it has similar bookplates to the second volume, the rear cover is detached but otherwise the binding is sound, plates are clean but a little darkened with occasional freckles. The other volume,The Rivers of France, was published in 1837 by Longman Rees Brown Green & Longman, the front board is detached with a bookplate of W Clifton on the inner face, there is a contemporary bookplate for Beresford Jones on the front end-paper, plates are a little darkened with occasional freckles. almost all of the spine cover is missing and the underlying paper is exposed for approx. 3cm at the top and 4 cm at the bottom. This volume contains a list of engravings for both volumes at the rear. A very scarce first edition, Handsomely bound with raised ornately gilt bands, fancy blind diced pattern in between black title label with gilt titles, marbled boards & end papers most plates are foxed water stained to the top edge the first eight badly so effecting the actual plates, still the book is clean and tight 62 plates including frontis, . Moderate dampstaining (presumably from a River in France) to top-right quadrant of most of textblock, partly affecting plates; surprisingly few traces of occasional foxing throughout.
