Part of the lovely series of classic works of literature designed for young readers published in the early-mid-20th century by David McKay, each illustrated by a noted artist. Each has colored cloth-covered boards (this one is in deep navy blue with gilt spine lettering) with a decorative full-color paper pastedown on the front cover 7 decorative endpapers. There is also a full-color frontispiece & 12 gorgeous full-color internal illustrations, all reproductions of original paintings by artist N. C. Wyeth especially commissioned for this book! He has also contributed an Illustrator's Preface, dated 1920. The hardcover book is in VG condition: extremely clean, with random smudges & 4 points of tape residue inside on front & rear endpapers where someone had taped a DJ protector. The binding is strong & square. Pages show moderate tanning around edges, commensurate with age. Light shelfwear/soil to outside page edges. Absolutely NO writing or underlining or highlighting. NOT ex-lib. Unusual to find on these books, because they were so well-loved & read extensively, this one has its original DJ!!!!! It is in VG-/Good+ condition, with a 2" unclosed tear at juncture of front cover-front flap, & more minor edgewear, slight chipping all around, heaviest at both ends of spine. Former owners had protected it in saran wrap, which accounts for its loveliness today! This has been removed & replaced with archival mylar for years of more reading pleasure.
