London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1902. Hardcover. Near Fine. Octavos. Two volume set. 332, (26), pages. Hardcovers bound in full red morocco leather by Zaehnsdorf. Light wear to the bindings. Signed Bindings; signed "Bound by Zaehnsdorf, 1907" in gilt in the leather at the bottom inside the front covers of both volumes. Rules and initials on the bindings in gilt. Raised spine bands and gilt rules and lettering on the spines and gilt inner dentelles. Top edge of text blocks are gilt. Bindings are lightly soiled from handling. Marbled endpapers. Some occasoinal pencil notations on the verso of the front flyleaf of Volume I and on the reverse of some of the plates. An impressive, beautiful set. The normal illlustrations are bound at the end of Volume II, but the rest of the set has nearly 100 copperplate and steel plate engravings tipped in throughout. Most of the engravings are portraits of those persons mentioned in the books. A few of these are hand-colored, and one is a folding hand-colored plate of a woman. A few of the plates appear to be 17th century, but most are 18th and 19th century engravings. Most are laid down on a boarder of paper with rulings on the front in red or green ink. Each volume has a specially printed page, dated 1902, noting that this is an Extra-Illustrated production. The extra engravings are from actual 17th-19th century publications and are not reprints. A beautiful set.
