John Murray, London, 1897. 2nd Impression. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 279 pages (complete). A VERY RARE copy of this memoir of Roddy Owen (after whom the Owen Falls in Uganda were named). The copy is embellished with: a letter to a previous owner (J B Booth - who has attached a press cutting to the frontispage and signed the title page) from Sir William Gowers. Gowers had been Governor in Uganda until 1932. This letter, in response to the press cutting attached, does talk about Owen in Uganda, though it deals mainly with the marital status the cricketer Bill Yardley. The letter is dated May 16th 1954 - just a few months before Gowers' death (fortunately at the end of the cricket season). A comfortable copy. The boards are much worn and scuffed and rubbed and marked by handling all about. The corners are knocked. The back cover has a small storage injury/ puncture. The boards and spine are secure and comfortable. The contents are mild-mannered and pleasing. There is a gift inscription on the frontispage. The frontis and end papers have wear, splashes of foxing. Attached to the first free page is an article on Owen by Gowers. The contents are very occasionally annotated (neatly and in pencil). The page trims are worn by age, handling. The contents are pleasingly clubbable. There are sporadic splodges of foxing. Otherwise, they are clean, clear, comfortable, companionable, certain, keen. fk.
