Translated from the German by M. Joseph Costelloe, S. J. Index, notes, list of abbreviations. Many photos and illustrations. Tan linen binding. xiv, 224 pp. A history and description of the 90 miles of catacombs that lie underneath Rome and its roads, which hold the crypts and bones of early Christian martyrs, popes, apostles, pagans and other ancient Romans. Kirschbaum was one of a four-man commission that Pope Pius XII named to explore St. Peter's Tomb among the catacombs in 1954. .
