About This Item

New York: Doubleday, 1976. hardcover. very good(+)/very good. 587 pages, very thick 8vo, black cloth-backed tan boards, dust wrapper (light edgewear and surface rubbing). Garden City: Doubleday, 1976. A very good(+) copy in a very good dust wrapper.

Presentation copy, signed in full and inscribed on front free endpaper: "September 1976, Carole Dolph, lovely lady, Kunta Kinte's family wishes the very warm best to your and your family -- and especially I do for the warm great help you have given me with Roots, Sincerely, Alex Haley." Ink of inscription has faded from black to blue on one side. (Kunta Kinte is a character from the book, loosely based on one of Haley's ancestors.)

Tracing his ancestry through six generations - slaves and freedmen, farmers and blacksmiths, lawyers and architects - back to Africa, Alex Haley discovered a sixteen-year-old youth, Kunta Kinte. It was this young man, who had been torn from his homeland and in torment and anguish brought to the slave markets of the New World, who held the key to Haley's deep and distant past. Originally published: Garden City, N.Y. : Doubleday, 1976.
