About This Item

Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. Good/good. Warmly inscribed and dated by the author on the tipped-in free front endpaper in black felt pen. Inscription reads: "August 13, 1980 / For ----- -------- - warmest / wishes to you and your / family from me and / the whole Roots family / of Kunta Kinta! / Sincerely, / Alex Haley."

587pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] 1/2 black cloth over tan boards. The dust jacket has been adhered to the book, resulting in some glue-staining to the inside flaps and endpapers (with a bit of it over the author's inscription). Dust jacket has overall wear, and one 9cm closed tear. The spine is rolled. The front pastedown has the name of the person to whom the book was inscribed, and there is a brief gift inscription on the verso of the front free endpaper.

Synopsis

Tracing his ancestry through six generations - slaves and freedmen, farmers and blacksmiths, lawyers and architects - back to Africa, Alex Haley discovered a sixteen-year-old youth, Kunta Kinte. It was this young man, who had been torn from his homeland and in torment and anguish brought to the slave markets of the New World, who held the key to Haley's deep and distant past. Originally published: Garden City, N.Y. : Doubleday, 1976.
