London: Etchells & Macdonald, 1926.. Quarto. Cream linen spine and orange cloth over boards, stamped in gilt. Faint dust soiling to spine, trace of normal offsetting to endsheet gutters, otherwise a fine copy in lightly worn slipcase. First edition. Introduction and captions to the illustrations by Bernard Windeler. Illustrated with twenty-three original copper engravings by Wadsworth, printed from the plates, both full-page and vignette, and some delicately handcolored. One of four hundred and fifty copies. Wadsworth was, of course, one of the original signators to the Vorticist manifesto and regrettably that tradition shows through only occasionally and briefly in these draftsman-like renderings. Of particular interest to this cataloguer is the probability that the author of the captions is the same B.C. Windeler whose ELIMUS, with illustrations by Dorothy Shakespear, was published in Pound's INQUEST series three years earlier.

Description:
Yale University Press, 1987. Hard cover. Like New/Very Good. Rossetti and His Circle is a book of twenty-three caricatures by English caricaturist, essayist and parodist Max Beerbohm. Published in 1922 by William Heinemann, the drawings were Beerbohm's humorous imaginings concerning the life of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his fellow Pre-Raphaelites, the period, as he put it, "just before oneself." The book is now considered one of Beerbohm's masterpieces. Sir Henry Maximilian Beerbohm (24 August 1872 - 20 May 1956) was an English essayist, parodist and caricaturist under the signature Max. He first became known in the 1890s as a dandy and a humourist. He was the drama critic for the Saturday Review from 1898 until 1910, when he relocated to Rapallo, Italy. In his later years he was popular for his occasional radio broadcasts. Among his best-known works is his only novel, Zuleika Dobson, published in 1911. His caricatures, drawn usually in pen or pencil with muted watercolour… Read More

Description:
This is a very lovely small book of poetry by Dante Gabriel Rossetti with illustrations by Paul Woodroffe. It was published by David McKay, Philadelphia, and dates to circa 1916. This appears to be a special binding, more luxurious than the softcover binding that McKay published, because this one has covers of thick rose-colored suede leather with the title and author impressed deeply into the suede on the front cover and spine. The front and back have double-page illustrations by Paul Woodroffe, as shown, and the title page has a lovely design as well as a facing illustration; there are 3 other illustrations among the 27 pages. The illustrations are in the Arts & Crafts or Art Nouveau style. The page edges are gilt, as shown, and there is a pink ribbon bookmark sewn in. This is the only copy with this binding that I have found. Please use the zoom function to see the great details. This little volume has survived well for 100 years. The interiors are in good, clean condition; the only condition… Read More

London: Clover Hill Editions at the Rampart Lions Press, 1974. Unbound. Fine. Burne-Jones, Edward. Burne-Jones, Edward. Unbound. Prints (sold individually) of Burne-Jones's illustrations which were originally designed to accompany The Story of Cupid and Psyche in a Kelmscott version of Morris's The Earthly Paradise. The blocks were "rediscovered" in the 1960s, and in 1974, the Rampant Lions Press published an edition of the work using them. These engravings were printed from those original wood blocks. The book and prints were in a limited edition of 100. A separate cloth box housed 44 loose prints. Paper size: 13 x 9 inches. Image size: 4.25 x 3.25 inches. PRE/100716.
