privately published, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk; ISBN 095169209., , 1985. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition. During the Second World War the Royal Air Force established two airfields close to the Suffolk horse-racing town of Newmarket. Just to the West of the town, and crossed by the border with Cambridgeshire, lies the racecourse, sited in slightly undulating countryside and long famous in racing circles. Here, over the next few years, the RAF developed an important Bomber Command airfield, RAF Newmarket Heath, commandeering the racecourse buildings and eventually erecting the many others needed for efficient operations. Little evidence remains to indicate that an airfield was here; just two hangers and a Nissen hut, now isolated by the A45 Newmarket bypass road which crosses the site, and the control tower, still standing behind the Grandstand. On the opposite side of the town was RAF Snailwell, a very different airfield but equally important in its own way. Here again, very little of a tangible nature remains. Part of the site has been developed as the Jockey Training School and the rest has reverted to agriculture, except where it is crossed by the same Newmarket bypass road. This book is an attempt to put on record some of the events of forty or more years ago, before it is too late, mentioning in the process some of those who took part and some who did not return.
