The Royal Gauger; or, Gauging made Perfectly Easy, as Practised by the Officers of his Majesty's Revenue of Excise...

by Leadbetter, Charles:

Condition: See description

London: J. Rivington, R. Baldwin et al, c.1770 Sixth edition, undated by c.1770 from contents. 'Augmented and improved by Samuel Clark.' HB. Full leather, with gilt short title on red panel to spine. xviii, 493pp. With 8 engraved folding plates, and two folded tables, all appear to be present. The detailed text includes the mathematics of gauging and assessing quantities, the range of products to be guaged as well as the laws, penalties and procedures to be used by excise officers. This copy has obviously been well used in the profession, with various pencil and ink notes in old hands to the endpapers and prelims, full of fascinating history on this subject, is in very worn condition. The front cover is detached (present) and the leather on the back cover is frayed. The pages are well held by the binding, however. Closed page edges are darkened, and many pages have browning, handling marks, spots and some stains. The folding plates have generally frayed or torn edges, browning and spotting, and one is loose (present). A Good study copy.
