About This Item

London England: Sphere Books, 1976. Paperback. Tiny mark to edge. Slightly sunned spine. In 1917 King George V changed his name from the German-sounding Saxe-Coburg in response to the intense anti-German feelings which marked public opinion during the war years. Thus the Windsors, the family name of the present Royal House, came into being. The first Windsor reigned udring the agonies of the Great War and lived on to become a much-loved father to his subjects in a far-flung empire. Then followed the brief but dramatic reign of Edward VII ending in the trauma of abdication and leading to the accession of his younger brother. Shy and withdrawn where Edward had been extrovert and dashing, George VI found an ideal consort in Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and rose to become like his father, a beloved figure and a symbol of the nation's unity in war. When George died in 1952 he was succeeded by Elizabeth, his twenty-five-year-old daughter. She faced the problem of an expectant nation acclaiming with highest hopes the 'new Elizabethan age'. In establishing a uniquely informal sytle of monarchy, this Queen has made herself more accessible, certainly more widely known, than any sovereign in the nation's history. Illustrated. 256 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . Reprint. Soft Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Paperback.
