About This Item
1920. Announcement card for royal visit to Australia of Prince Edward, who famously abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. The public reception for this visit to Sydney was held at 10:30 am, Friday 18th June, 1920; the reaction to his visit is described by Edward in his autobiography: "The ‘touching mania', one of the most remarkable phenomena connected with my travels, took the form of a mass impulse to prod some part of the Prince of Wales. Whenever I entered a crowd, it closed around me like an octopus. I can still hear the shrill, excited cry, ‘I touched him!' If I were out of reach, then a blow to my head with a folded newspaper appeared to satisfy the impulse". With floral border, flag, crests, battleship. Color printed card, 9 1/2 x 6 3/4". Short crease at upper left corner, o/w very good.
