In Poor Condition: incomplete: lacking pp. 27-34, 89-92, and 131-32; lacking leather at head of spine; boards are very worn, with loss along edges; lacking lower corner of title page, without loss of text; section lacking along fore-edge of pp. 101-2, without loss of text; 5-cm. tear from lower corner of pp. 127-8, without loss of text; light soiling throughout.

First edition - the uncommon first state, which was subsequently withdrawn and pulped; this copy seemingly the publisher's file copy, with that text lightly inkstamped to the front free endpaper. 8vo. 66pp. Green cloth lettered in gold at the spine. A fine copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, just slightly faded at spine panel and at the head of the upper panel, and with a small sliver of staining to the lower edge. Thirty Betjeman poems accompanied by a Piper frontispiece and seventeen line drawings, several of them full-page. Printing errors impacting the poems 'Bristol and Clifton' and 'Sunday Afternoon in St. Enodoc Church, Cornwall' necessitated a complete recall and a corrected edition was published the following year. An anthology featuring works by 72 poets, most of them Black or people of color. Besides Major, poets include Julian Bond, Victor Hernández Cruz, David Henderson, Calvin Hernton, Marvin Jackman, Bob Kaufman, Ishmael Reed, Sonia Sanchez, and Gloria and Stephen Tropp. Lengthy prologue by the editor, Walter Lowenfels. (For the full list, please see the second photo.) Clarence Major (b. 1936), who inscribed this book, has written more than a dozen collections of poetry. He is a distinguished professor emeritus of 20th-century American literature at the University of California, Davis. This is a review copy, with the Random House notice laid in.
