Moderate shelf handling wear. . Personal memoir recounts the experience of a Zouave trumpeter in the Crimean War. In addition to descriptions of camp-life and combat, the narrative includes short discussions of Florence Nightingale and the Sisters of Charity, as well as more information about medical services and hospitals in general. The Zouaves were a class of light infantry regiments of the French Army linked to French North Africa. The Zouaves, along with the indigenous Tirailleurs Algeriens, were among the most decorated units of the French Army.

1869. Two fabulous original watercolours. Each shows a soldier sitting upon a rock. One shows a cavalry officer in full Cuirassier with sabre. The second is probably from a Dragoon regiment. Beautifully coloured and represented. Slight edgewear with nicking to the edges. Each is signed A. Gire to the bottom right corner. One is also dated 1869. Each measures: 440 x 300 mm (17¼ x 11¾ inches). Deux fabuleuses aquarelles originales. Chacun montre un soldat assis sur un rocher. L'une montre un officier de cavalerie en plein cuirassier au sabre. Le second provient probablement d'un régiment de dragons. Magnifiquement coloré et représenté. Légère usure des bords avec entailles sur les bords. Chacun est signé A.
